Light is made up of very small waves of energy. Sunlight contains a spectrum of different coloured light waves: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. The order of colours in the spectrum is always the same. The light spectrum was first described by English physicist Isaac Newton in 1665. It is most commonly seen in the rainbow.
